Matthew 6:9–13 Teaching Prayer – The Lord’s Prayer Explained and Prayed

Daily Devotion for Today – Morning and Night Prayer Learning How Jesus Taught Us to Pray
Recorded Live in London, England with Reverend Ben Cooper

Scripture (NIV):
“This, then, is how you should pray:
‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
 your kingdom come,
 your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’”
(Matthew 6:9–13, NIV)

Show Notes (Teaching + Prayer Form):
In Matthew 6:9–13, Jesus Himself teaches us how to pray. This is the foundation of prayer for every believer, a model that millions across the world search every day under “The Lord’s Prayer,” “how to pray,” and “teach me to pray.” Recorded live in London, England with Reverend Ben Cooper, this one-off teaching prayer podcast explains and prays the Lord’s Prayer in a way that reaches every listener, morning or night, across the globe.

The Lord’s Prayer is not just words to recite; it is a framework to live. It begins with worship: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” Every prayer starts with honoring God. It moves to surrender: “Your kingdom come, your will be done.” This is about aligning our lives with His will. Then comes provision: “Give us today our daily bread.” Prayer acknowledges that all our needs come from Him. Next, forgiveness: “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive.” Prayer restores relationships with God and others. Finally, protection: “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us.” Prayer is a shield against the enemy.

This prayer remains the world’s most recognized, most searched, and most used prayer — but today, let it be alive in your heart.

SPEAKER_00:

Thank you for joining us today on a daily Christian prayer podcast with myself, Reverend Ben Cooper, recorded live here in London, England. May the Spirit of the Living God be over you today. You know, we just want to spend a bit more time, you know. We're pushing six prayers out a day, and this is just another bit of a teaching area, you know. Just maybe just throwing a blanket out over there, you know, just putting some scriptures out there because we're living in some really powerful times, and uh prayer is key, as we mentioned before. And just another little bit of a quick fire chat, you know, this is gonna be a little bit longer than five minutes, so maybe you want to download this and listen to it later on. We're still pushing out the six prayers across the day, uh the global prayers that we do, you know. But may God bless you. But right now, I just want to spend a little bit of time just in the Lord's Prayer. So if you've got a moment and you can listen to this right now, that'd be absolutely amazing. Maybe when you're in bed, maybe when you've just got a bit of time to relax. But you know, I really feel in my spirit, I've been saying a lot lately, you know, we've got to we gotta keep praying, we've got to keep praying. We are living in really powerful, we're living in the the second coming, we're waiting for the second coming of Jesus. And to be fair, to be completely fair, there are some great ministries out there, there's some great churches out there, great prayer ministries. But brother and sister, you know, we are in a crisis. The UK, I live within the UK in London, here in England, and uh as you are aware, you know, and around where we are, you know, the area, you know, it's very interesting. The area we are lacking Jesus across the UK. We've got a government that really isn't following Christ, and I've got to be very careful how I say things, you know. Uh, we don't press any political drum, but what we are finding across the world is that we are trying to deal with a spiritual crisis, which we are in a major spiritual crisis. Probably the the biggest spiritual crisis we've been in since the cross of Calvary, with everything, the weight, the heaviness of life, we're trying to, and I don't mean me and you, but we're trying to deal with things in this in this materialistic way. We're trying to use politics and and religion and all the natural things of the world. We're trying to find answers uh through materialism and through the way the world is doing things, and and we are, I'm not saying that us and you and me, I'm just putting it out there at this minute, you know, that the church generally has come away from prayer and scripture. We got lots of worship. There is so much worship. We've never been in such a time where we got a lot of worship, but we got to be careful of the worship that's out there, you know. Is it secular Christianity? You know, many different labels we can put over it. But this is we're talking about prayer because prayer is our key. But what I'm just trying to get to is that I really believe God is leading you and me back to the fundamental points of prayer to pray, to pray, to pray. Maybe it's the first time that you're learning to pray out, but I just want to take us just for a few moments. If you've got some time a moment, please sit back, grab a cup of coffee, and just use this as a standalone uh bit of a podcast bonus as we're just teaching to pray. You know, I'm not teaching, I'm just literally reading out the word of God, uh, you know, and it it's just uh the spirit of the Lord really leads you because the Bible says you don't need man to teach you that the Spirit, the Holy Spirit teaches you. So if you've got a hunger for prayer, God is teaching you to pray. And prayer is very simple, as we mentioned on the uh the other teaching uh podcast. I use the word teaching, that little bonus track we put out there is called T2, and this is obviously T3, but it's just talking, uh just chatting over and turning the fat over uh regarding the Lord's prayer. So I just want to open this up. So if you're looking to move in prayer and to find how do how do I pray, you know, because we go to prayer meetings and they're very loud and very noisy in the Pentecostal movement, pastors jumping up and down at the front, making a load of noise and all this sort of stuff, and it can feel intimidating, but the Bible is clear, you know, go into that secret place, don't let your left hand know what the right hand is doing and all that sort of stuff. So prayer is private, prayer is quiet. Yeah, there's an area for I'll use the word like this, you know what I mean by when I say this corporate prayer. When we're all together, you know, we're all together and we're making a noise, and then you've got to be careful because him and her over there are trying to outpray this person, the pastor's trying to outpray the the worship team, the worship team's trying to outpray, you know. There's a lot of competition in church, and you know, we we've got to get back to prayer, we've got to get back to the fundamental side of prayer. So I just want to look at this Lord's Prayer. This is a this is amazing what God has given us through Christ Jesus coming out of the gospel. You know, we got it in the gospel of Luke, we've got it in the gospel of Matthew, but what is the Lord's Prayer? Basically, what is it? It's teaching the themes that are in the Lord's Prayer are pretty simple. We got worship, and that is through our Father, hallow be your name. Then we got surrender, your kingdom come. We got provision, give us today our daily bread. Then we got forgiveness and we got protection. There are areas within the Lord's Prayer. If you're looking to pray, I'm looking to pray more, I'm looking to grow in my prayer life, and it it it's it's critical, I really believe it's critical that we take hold of the Lord's Prayer. It's consistency, it's power, it's meaningful, it's Jesus teaching us how to pray. You know, we don't need an instructor, you don't need me, we don't need these great theological understanding words. Jesus is the teacher, Jesus is the high priest. So if you are looking to grow in your prayer life, I would encourage you to open up the Gospel of Matthew, chapter six, and really press into that. But when we look at the Gospel of Matthew, chapter uh chapter six, sorry, it's well worth just taking our time and expanding and meditating on that word. The power of prayer, I, you know, I can't emphasize it enough. You know, the Lord's Prayer, you know, explain that to me, Lord. The Lord's Prayer is really, really powerful. It's a great, great piece of scripture. It's a standalone, it's it's a standalone prayer. You know, God has given us something so awesome and so powerful. You know, we walk through the line line by line. We teach for it, we've we reflect through it, you know, and as we lead each other to pray for it, it's very strong, you know, it's a single, evergreen, powerful prayer, you know, it's one that Christ gives us, you know, we can break it down into like six areas. We got the Lord's teaching, we got, you know, hallow be thy name, you've got a surrender part of it, you got, as I said earlier, daily bread, and we're talking about sin as well and temptation. So we can break it all the way down, but the Lord's prayer is a powerhouse, a powerhouse of teaching. So if you are look looking and wanting to grow in prayer, I would encourage you to go to the Gospel of Matthew, chapter six, verses nine through to thirteen. And it it's a beautiful way to pray. You know, it should be on our on our lips every day. The prayer of the Lord, you know, and Matthew six verses nine through to thirteen. It's a teaching prayer, it's the Lord's prayer, it explains it, it expanded, whether it's the morning, the evening, wherever you are. Look, this is what it says. This then is how you should pray. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread and forgive us our debts, as we forgive those who have uh trespassed against us, or it could be, depending on what you're reading from, as we also forgive our debtors and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. And then it goes on, and you can, you know, forever and ever, Amen, and all that, you know. But coming from the Gospel of Matthew, it's really important that I've got to remind myself that it's not been added and it's not been taken away. There are other versions out there that read slightly different because it's been doctrinated, or should I say doctrinated, I'm not quite sure if that's a correct terminology, but what I mean is there are many denominations and a certain denomination that has tampered with the Lord's Prayer, but this is in its raw form, coming from Matthew chapter 6, verse 9 through to 13. So if you're looking to pray and expand your prayer life, it it's not buying a book on me uh uh talking about prayer, it's about actually getting into God and and saying, Jesus, what do you say about prayer? How do I how do I pray, Jesus? What's the best way to do this? And Jesus says this. I'm gonna read it again. This then is how you should pray. Our Father in heaven, hallow be thy name, your kingdom come, your will be done. As uh on earth as it is in heaven, give us today our daily bread and forgive us our debts, as we have also forgiven our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. It's that quick, it's that powerful. I believe that God is calling you to prayer. Wherever you are, as millions across the world are locking into prayer at this moment in time. The Lord's Prayer, how do I pray? Teach me to pray, you know, as I as I speak this out, recording this live here in London, England, we want to encourage you, you know, to keep praying, to take this prayer and put it on the tablet of your heart. You know, as we expand our prayer life, you know, God is moving in your heart, God is moving, whether this is the morning or the evening, whatever time zone you are. I want to encourage you to get in the word of God and to get into this Lord's Prayer and recite it and speak it out. It is a framework, framework, sorry, to live. You know, Christ has given us a framework to live by this prayer. It begins with worship, our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name. You know, every prayer starts honoring God. I've just got to honor God with every prayer, and it moves to surrender. The Lord's prayer, it then gently moves to surrender, which is really, really interesting. It says, Your kingdom come, your will be done. This is about aligning our lives with his will. It's it's pretty straightforward. Then comes provision, you know. So this scripture is laced up with forgiveness, your kingdom come. It's talking about surrender, and then it goes on to God's provision. Give us today our daily bread. The prayer acknowledges that we all need and we all need Jesus Christ. And then we have forgiveness, you know, forgive us our debts as we forgive those. You know, we we got this area of forgiveness, we got these major points in this prayer. We got forgiveness, we got daily bread, we got provision, we got his will aligning ourselves with the will of the Father. You know, hallowed be thy name. How how powerful is that? You know, when you start at the beginning of that, our father in heaven, hallowed be thy name. It it begins with worship. That is true worship. Now, forgive me for what I'm about to say, not singing the latest hashtag on the social medias by the latest Christian band or that artist, but true worship starts with the Father, our Father in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. That is true worship. It is not about the latest song that is out there, it is about the heart connecting with God because that's what worship is. Worship is connecting with God, not connecting with the audience, not connecting with the smoke machine, the light machine, not smoking, not connecting with all that Razmataz, but what true worship? The Bible says that you know we are worshippers and we will worship in spirit and in truth. It's critical for me to grab that. I've got to understand what that means. So the Lord's prayer starts with what? It starts with worship, and we have taken worship generally and made it into about making a noise and singing and dancing and standing on one hand and jumping up and down on one leg and saying that the Lord is here and moving in the spirit and all that old crazy stuff. You know, but true worship is prayer, that's that is the heart of God. True worship isn't singing and shouting and falling all over the place. True worship is starting with a prayer, and it starts with worship. You know, the Lord's prayer starts with worship. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Every prayer should start by honoring God, you know, and then we move to surrender. Your kingdom come, your will be done. This is about us aligning our lives with his will, with the plan of God. Then comes provision. So we've got all these major powerful attributes of scripture. Then we move to the provision of God. Give us today our daily bread. So we are acknowledging that God is providing, God is holy, God is just. We're talking about the will of the Father, submission coming to the King of Kings, and then the prayer acknowledges that that all our needs come from Him, you know, our needs come from Him, our daily bread, our our forgiveness. And then we move into the area of forgiveness. Forgive us our debts or debtors as we forgive those. And then it talks about restoration, it talks about repairing relationships and walking with God. It says we pray, you know, we pray that prayer, lead us not into temptation. Uh, it talks about protection, it talks about deliverance, it makes it a shield from the enemy. This Lord's prayer is so powerful, you know, it is laced with so much. It's talking about give us today our daily bread. It will feed you. The Bible says man doesn't live on bread alone, but by every word that perceives out of the mouth of God. So prayer is about forgiveness. Prayer is true worship. When we're in prayer, we are in worship. We don't have to listen to the radio, we don't have to listen to the latest trend on social media and all that, and wait till we get to church on Sunday, we're gonna sing a new song. That is not that is not what the Bible talks about. You know, when we say our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name, it starts with honouring God, it starts with true worship because honouring God and praying like that that is true authentic worship. I've got to repeat myself, it's not about singing the latest Razmatazz, it's about saying, Hallowed be thy name. Holy, holy is the Lord Almighty. You know, worship true worship is recognizing God's holiness. You know, there is power in the Lord's Prayer. It talks and it tells us that God won't lead us into temptation, but he will deliver us. God will not lead us into temptation, but he will deliver us when we are tempted by the way of the world. You know, God will make a way, there's always an escape route, there's always a way forward with God. The door is always open for Jesus, the door is always open with Jesus, the door is always open because guess what? He is the door, he is the way, the truth, the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. So everything can happen through Christ Jesus. So if you are looking to worship God, what do I do? I pray. If I'm looking to find healing, what do I do? I pray. If I'm looking to find a miracle, what do I do? I I pray. See, there is power in prayer, and I want to encourage you right now, wherever you are, for all of us to expand our prayer life and to take this model. Christ has given us a model, Christ has given us an overview. There is there is no any reason why I need to go anywhere else and study about prayer because God has given it to me through Christ Jesus, through the living word. So I want to encourage you to stay in prayer and take this model, take the Jesus model. You know, you don't need to take the Ben model or the pastor's model or the apostolic bishop's model or this person's model or this this session, that session. Take the Jesus model, take take the model from Christ. And what is that model? It is the model of the word of God. And you know, I pray that we will surrender to the will of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit. But let's just pray a moment before we before we disappear, you know, from this uh bonus teaching, chatting, whatever way we want to look at it. Father, in the name of Jesus, I pray for the listeners across the world today. I thank you for they've taken extra time to listen and just uh listen to me rambling on. But Father, I ask you that we will take the Lord's Prayer, every one of us, and we will pray through the Lord's Prayer, and we will realize the power and the urgency, the forgiving power that is in that scripture. Lord, that when we pray that prayer, when we get into that, it is true worship, it is true worship, it is free, and there is power in the name of Jesus. So I want to encourage you, wherever you are at the moment in the name of Jesus, to get hold of the Lord's Prayer and to get into it and to take it and to walk with it, to run with it, to move with it, to flow with it, to bend to the left and the right with it, and just let the Lord's prayer just gently move through your bones because it is such a powerful prayer, it will really change our lives if I can get hold of it, you know, and it is free because it's it's in the word of God. If you need a Bible, we will get you a Bible as well. That is part of this ministry. Our ministry, the core of this ministry is prayer. The core of our ministry is prayer. Also, we got the radio on the outskirts, you know, RB Christian Radio. We've got that sitting there, but also our other part of our ministry is getting Bibles, smuggling Bibles in, getting Bibles to you wherever you are across the world. So if you need a Bible, please hit us up on the socials. Please find us on rbchristianradio.net, and we will get you a Bible free of charge, free of charge delivered to your door, you know, because there's nothing more powerful than the word of God. But I want to say thank you to you wherever you are for staying tuned in with us, you know, throughout every day as we push six prayers out across the world, you know. May God bless you, but take hold of the Lord's Prayer, Matthew chapter six, and I thank you for standing with me today. My name's Reverend Ben Cooper, and I'll see you very, very soon. And the prayers are on their way. So come on, in the name of Jesus, never give up. But if you want to find a way to pray and to be taught how to pray, go to the Jesus model, go to the Jesus model. The Jesus model is found in the Gospel of Matthew chapter six, and read it and pray it and speak it aloud in the prayer meeting in your own group, wherever you are, but pray, brother and sister. You know, prayer is about isn't about making up words by ourselves, prayer is about worship, and we can only worship when we're in the word, because worship is in spirit and in truth. That's true worship. It's not on Sunday mornings, it's not listening to the radio, you know, singing along with an emotional atmosphere. That is not true worship, that's euphoria, that is completely different. But true worship starts with prayer because that's what the Lord's Prayer does. It starts with worshiping our Father. Holy, holy is the Lord. That is true worship. It's not singing and dancing and jumping up and down in your in the car or the van or your life. It literally is through the power of the gospel of Matthew, chapter 6. True worship is prayer. May God bless you wherever you are today, across the world. May the Spirit of the Living God carry you. We will see you soon, and as I always say, until tomorrow.
